Wandering Into Wisdom

This blog chronicles the knowledge, insight and wisdom I encounter every day as a leadership consultant, executive coach, educator, father, friend and citizen. This site is dedicated to my father, Louis (Jack) Laughlin, who passed on to me an appreciation for wisdom. A special thanks to my friend Isaac Cheifetz, a businessman and journalist, who helped me understand the value of blogs and encouraged me to write one.

10 Years of Therapy

Here's a summary of 10 years of Therapy

1) No one is coming to save you. Being a functioning adult means realizing you are responsible for everything in your life even if it wasn't your fault.
2) Strong boundaries make for good relationships, weak boundaries make drama.
3) Many of your problems don't get fixed. You just learn how to live despite them.
4) You mind lies to you all the time. It will tell you that the world is ending when it's not, that a mistake if fatal when it's not, what everyone is thinking about you and laughing about you when they're not. Learn how to tell your mind to shut the fuck up.
5) Stop trying to convince people to like you. The right people won't need to be convinced and everyone else is just going to get very annoyed.
6) Sometimes the best thing you can do it let a dream die.
7) Only a few people in your life are going to matter in the long run. When you find them treat them right, make time for them, keep them close

What Do You Think

We suffer more in our imagination than in reality.
     Seneca

Our life is what our thoughts make it.
     Marcus Aurelius

Me from Myself — to banish

Me from Myself — to banish

Me from Myself — to banish —
Had I Art —
Impregnable my Fortress
Unto All Heart —

But since Myself — assault Me —
How have I peace
Except by subjugating
Consciousness?

And since We're mutual Monarch
How this be
Except by Abdication —
Me — of Me?

by Emily Dickinson

Education Par Excellence

“The faculty of voluntarily bringing back a wandering attention, over and over again, is the very root of judgment, character, and will. ... An education which should improve this faculty would be the education par excellence.”
William James

Replacing Leaders

In the military it is the responsibility of any leader at any level to train their replacement as if they'll be a casualty at any moment. Dictators collect power as if they'll live forever and if they pass their power off to anyone it is usually their children, who they see as the embodiment of themselves.
